| Distance | about 290 km |
| Driving time each way | 4 to 5 hours, stops included |
| One day in Luxor | around 16 hours in total, 8 to 9 of them in the car |
| Type of trip | private and all-inclusive |
The route
The road runs south from Hurghada to Safaga, where you turn onto the desert highway towards Qena. For about 160 kilometres you cross the Eastern Desert, then you reach the Nile valley and the landscape changes within minutes from stone and sand to fields and palms. From Qena the road follows the Nile into Luxor.
How long does the drive take?
Count on four to five hours each way, stops and checkpoints included. Seeing Luxor in a single day means around 16 hours in total, eight or nine of them in the car. It is a long day, and we tell you so beforehand so that you can decide in your own time.
The day trip
We organise the trip privately and all-inclusive, for you and your party only. You are picked up at your hotel in Hurghada around four in the morning and reach Luxor around eight. The standard programme is Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the temple of Hatshepsut. Around eight in the evening you are back at your hotel.

At midday you have a freshly cooked meal of the best quality. We care a great deal about food, because after such a long day in the sun it is more than a break.
An Egyptologist from our team accompanies you. It matters to us that our Egyptologists are convincing in their field and good company as people. The programme is flexible. Guests who want to know more get alternatives from us beyond the standard programme.
With a night in Luxor
If one day with this much driving is too long for you, plan a night in Luxor. You get more time at the sites and you do not have to drive back in the dark. This suits travellers with children and anyone who wants to see Luxor without hurry. We plan two-day versions like this regularly. Tell us when you are in Hurghada and we will plan it with you.
Which version suits you?
- One day: you have little time and the long drive does not bother you.
- Two days: you travel with children, you want to see Luxor at an easier pace, or you would rather not drive that far in one day.
If you have limited mobility, we can take that into account. Just talk to us.
Staying somewhere other than Hurghada?
From the other towns on the Red Sea the drive is shorter or longer. The day in Luxor stays the same:
- from El Quseir: 218 km, three to three and a half hours each way
- from Makadi Bay: 260 km, three and a half to four hours
- from El Gouna: 314 km, four to four and a half hours
- from Marsa Alam: about 350 km, four and a half to five and a half hours
