Cairo & Giza in Depth — 4 Days

Cairo rewards those who slow down. Four days, always with a private Egyptologist, is roughly the point at which the city stops being a queue at the pyramids and starts being a place.

Giza and the Sphinx at their quietest hours, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the medieval lanes and mosques of Islamic Cairo, and the old churches and synagogue of Coptic Cairo. Four days leave room for the older Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square as well — we agree the museums with you beforehand, according to what interests you, and over this length of stay both are comfortably possible.

Why four days and not two

Because Cairo is four different cities and each wants an unhurried half-day. Giza is one. The Grand Egyptian Museum is another, and it takes three to four hours whatever anyone tells you. The medieval quarter along Al-Muizz street is a third, and Coptic Cairo in Fustat is a fourth.

Compress that into two days and you get the version most visitors describe afterwards: hot, loud, and a blur. Spread it over four and people leave saying Cairo was their favourite part, which is not what they expected to say.

The timing that makes it work

Giza early, because the plateau has no shade and the coaches arrive at nine. The museum in the afternoon, because it is air-conditioned and the middle of the day is unusable outdoors. The medieval city late, when the shops reopen after the midday prayers and the light on the stone is worth the wait.

None of that is a fixed timetable. It is a private guide and a private car, so if you want a slow morning, take one and we move the day.

Honestly

Cairo is loud, crowded and hard on the nerves at first. The traffic has to be seen to be believed. Nothing in the itinerary is physically demanding beyond walking on uneven ground and a lot of it, but the density of the city is its own kind of tiring, and four days is paced for that rather than against it.

Breakfast is included at the hotel; lunches and dinners are not, deliberately, because eating in Cairo is half the reason to be there and we would rather your guide take you somewhere than book you a set menu.

Who it suits

Anyone using Cairo as the beginning of a longer Egypt trip, which is the sensible order — you understand the Nile far better having seen where its contents ended up. Also anyone on a short break who would rather do one city properly than three badly.
