Sunrise Hot Air Balloon over Luxor

4 Hours

Overview

You leave the hotel in the dark. On the West Bank the balloons are already lying on their sides, and the burners light them from inside like paper lanterns. Then the basket lifts, the ground drops away, and the whole of ancient Thebes is laid out beneath you at once.

From the air the geography finally makes sense: the green strip of the Nile, the sharp line where irrigation stops and desert begins, the Valley of the Kings folded into the hills, Hatshepsut’s terraces cut into the cliff. About 45 minutes in the air, roughly four hours door to door.

Flights go at first light and only in settled weather. If the wind is wrong, the pilots do not fly.

Slower, or differently: always possible. Tell us how you like to travel and we will rebuild the day around it.

Trip Highlights

Tour Itinerary

Collected from your hotel or Nile cruise boat while it is still dark, and taken across the river to the launch field.

Tea while the envelopes fill. The pilot runs through the safety briefing and how to stand for landing. It is simpler than you expect.

Around 45 minutes over the Theban necropolis: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple, Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum and the Nile beyond.

Down in the fields, where the ground crew is already waiting, and back to your hotel in time for a proper breakfast.
