Eastern Desert Quad Safari, Guests of a Bedouin Family - Hurghada

6 Hours

Overview

Twenty minutes inland from the Red Sea hotels the coast disappears and the Eastern Desert begins - hard gravel plain, dry riverbeds and low mountains the colour of rust. You cross it on a quad bike, in convoy, with a guide leading and another closing the line.

Halfway, the track reaches a Bedouin settlement. You are shown how bread is baked in the sand under a fire, how the herbal tea is made, and you can ride a camel if you want to. It is a stop that has been doing this for years, so expect it to be organised rather than accidental.

Quad tours are sold on every corner of this coast and they are not the same. We choose our partner carefully and go and look for ourselves: the condition and servicing of the machines, helmets and protective gear in the right sizes, one guide leading and one closing the convoy, and a group small enough to stay together. We have visited the settlement too. If something does not meet that standard, the operator does not go into our programme.

The afternoon run back is timed for sunset, when the mountains turn red and the dust hangs in the low light.

Slower, or differently - always possible. Tell us how you like to travel and we will rebuild the day around it.

Not sure what to hand over at the end? Our guide to tipping in Egypt gives real numbers.

Who are we actually riding with?
A partner we selected and have visited ourselves. We look at the condition and servicing of the quads, at helmets and protective gear in the right sizes, at having two guides per convoy, and at keeping the group small enough to stay together. If an operator does not meet that standard, they do not go into our programme.
