Is Luxor worth it as a day trip from Hurghada?

Yes, if you go privately and you are happy with a sixteen-hour day. Whether it is worth it depends less on Luxor than on how the day is planned, and that is what this page is about.

Luxor is four to five hours from Hurghada across the Eastern Desert. People ask whether it is worth doing in a day, and the honest answer depends almost entirely on how you do it.

What you can actually see in a day

A realistic private day covers three things properly: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahari, and Karnak. That is the West Bank in the morning while the rock is still cool and Karnak in the afternoon light.

It does not cover Luxor Temple as well, or the Ramesseum, or Medinet Habu, or Dendera. A programme that lists five sites in one day looks fuller on paper and leaves less time at each. We would rather show you three properly. The programme is flexible, and guests who want to know more get alternatives from us beyond the standard.

The private day

We organise the trip privately and all-inclusive, for you and your party only. You are picked up at your hotel around four in the morning and reach the West Bank when the sites open. You can spend twenty-five minutes inside a tomb and stop when something is worth stopping for. At midday there is a freshly cooked meal of the best quality, because we care a great deal about food. An Egyptologist from our team accompanies you. We value our Egyptologists for their expertise and for being good company as people.

The price depends on your date and the size of your party. It is on request: tell us when you are in Hurghada and how many of you there are, and we send you an offer.

The part people underestimate

Eight or nine of the sixteen hours are spent in a car. That is part of what you are choosing, and no amount of good guiding changes it.

For most people it is a fair trade. For some it is not, and that is worth deciding before you book rather than at four in the morning. If the driving is the part you would resent, tell us and we will suggest something else.

Who it suits

  • Anyone on a Red Sea holiday who would otherwise never see the Nile valley. Luxor is the reason a great many people come to Egypt at all, and a long day is better than not going.
  • Reasonably fit adults and older children who can manage heat and steps.
  • People who would rather see three things properly than six in a hurry.

When the two-day version suits better

  • You travel with young children, for whom the day is long.
  • You would rather not drive that far in one day.
  • You visit between June and August and want more time out of the midday heat.
  • You have limited mobility. We can take that into account, just talk to us.

What to think about when planning

  • Pickup time: it sets the whole day, so ask for it early.
  • Tombs: the standard Valley of the Kings ticket covers three tombs. Tutankhamun and Seti I are separate tickets.
  • Guiding language: a day explained in your own language by someone who can answer your questions is a different day. We guide in German or English.
  • Documents: take your passport or hotel ID card, there are checkpoints on the desert road.

The alternative: a night in Luxor

Do it over two days with a night in Luxor. The driving is the same, and the trip becomes a different experience: Karnak at opening rather than at three in the afternoon, dinner in Luxor, and the West Bank at first light the next morning without having got up at four. We plan this version regularly, and we are happy to plan it with you.

Entry rules

  • For entry rules, see our page on entry requirements and the current information of the Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt).

Our version is a private full day with an Egyptologist from our team, and we will tell you honestly if we think the two-day version suits you better.
