Hurghada is a good base for a day away from the beach, and three trips are genuinely worth the drive: Luxor, Giza, and the Eastern Desert on your doorstep. They are very different days, and the difference is mostly how many hours you spend in a car.

All of them run privately, with a licensed Egyptologist and a driver for your party alone. We plan for you, with you: tell us your hotel and your date, and we set the day around them.

The three options at a glance

WhereThe drivePrice from
Luxorabout 290 km, 4 to 5 hours each way, pickup around 04:00$200 per person
Giza and Cairoabout 450 km, just under 5 hours each way, pickup around midnight$240 per person
Eastern Deserton the doorstep, under an hour, an afternoon start$60 per person

Luxor: temples and tombs

The densest concentration of pharaonic architecture anywhere in Egypt, and the trip most guests take. The Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple in the morning, Karnak in the afternoon, with a guide who lives in Luxor. Pickup is around four, you are back around eight in the evening.

The full day, hour by hour: Luxor day trip from Hurghada. Still deciding? Is Luxor worth it from the Red Sea?

Giza and Cairo: the pyramids

The longest of the three and the one that needs the most honesty. Pickup is around midnight so that you reach Giza at opening time, and you are back late the same night. The Grand Egyptian Museum is part of the day. Flights instead of the road are possible and turn it into a far shorter day.

The full day: Pyramids day trip from Hurghada. And the honest answer to the obvious question: is a day trip from Hurghada to Cairo worth it?

The Eastern Desert: half a day, no long drive

If the long roads are not for you, the desert starts a few kilometres behind the town. Six hours, quad bikes across the sand, tea with a Bedouin family, and back in time for dinner. It is the easiest day on this page and the only one that does not start in the dark.

Desert quad safari and Bedouin village, from $60 per person.

Which one should you pick?

First time in Egypt and the pyramids are the reason you came? Giza. Nothing else substitutes for standing in front of them, and the museum is now part of the same day.

Want temples, tombs and colour on three-thousand-year-old walls? Luxor. Shorter drive, more time on site, and the single richest day Egypt offers.

Travelling with small children, or not keen on a long car journey? The desert afternoon, or two days in Luxor with a night there. We plan the two-day version regularly and it changes the trip completely.

What all three have in common

  • Private. Your party, your vehicle, your guide. The departure time is set around your hotel.
  • A licensed Egyptologist who lives where you are going.
  • Entrance fees included for everything on the itinerary, so there is nothing to settle at the gate.
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off, door to door.
  • A plan you helped write. Add a site, drop one, start later. Tell us how you like to travel.

Staying along the coast rather than in town?

We run the same days from the neighbouring resorts. The programme does not change, only the drive and the pickup time:

Before you book

The month you travel changes these days more than anything else: the best time to visit Egypt. And everything about passports, visas and health: Egypt entry requirements.

If a day is not enough

A day trip shows you the highlights and stays a day trip. Our dahabeya cruise starts in Luxor and sails on to Aswan, and Cairo, the Nile and the Red Sea puts all of it into one journey that begins where your beach holiday ends.

Ask us

Tell us which hotel in Hurghada you are in, which day you have free, and who is travelling. We will say which of the three we would choose in your position, and why.
